Project Inspiration

Hidden along the east shore of Maui, Hana is one of the last Hawaiian places along the island chain.  Its coves are home to almost 2,000 residents, some of which are among the remaining 100% or pure blood Native Hawaiians in the world. My father and his family are among this rare group that, not unlike many of the native species to the islands, will be extinct someday.

Hana Ho’oilina: The Hawaiian Heritage Project captures the memories of those who have grown up in Hana through video histories to preserve this rich cultural history for future generations. This project aims to bring these stories to life as a legacy to their descendants by bridging technology with traditional Hawaiian storytelling.
